We liked the old 911 but we prefer to be even faster: the Porsche 911 S is a perfect sport even with a turbo. Engine: 3.0 liter gasoline biturbo (420 hp, 500 Nm from 1700 rpm) Propulsion: rear Transmission: 7-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission Performance: 0-100 km / h in 4.1 seconds, top speed at 306 km / h Weight and load: weight 1535 kg, boot volume 145 liters Standardized consumption: 7.7 liters per 100 km Basic model: 911 Carrera, 370 hp, from CHF 116 400. Discussions are strangely calm on the World Wide Web. About ten years ago, fans of Carrera would have had tears in their eyes if the atmospheric engine had been replaced by a turbo. But at a time when the Cayenne is considered the Porsche par excellence in China and where even Ferrari advocates downsizing this only causes indifference. It was predictable.
Emissions standards are also putting pressure on Porsche 911 cars, which in turn is spreading to 911. Now, with the exception of the GT3 and the next R, all 911s will be equipped with a forced ventilation system, as for the 911 Turbo. This is already the case for the Carrera and the S as well as Targa and 4x4. It should soon be the turn of the GTS. It is now a question of trying a three-liter biturbo in a Carrera S (with 420 hp and optional PDK) which, as if to console itself, develops 20 hp and 60 Nm more. The start is initially disillusioned: a few charming imperfections such as a slow motion or metallic clatter disappeared. Too bad. At startup, the turbo has a very slight delay but much more consistency. At full load at low speed, the roar of the engine seems domesticated. On the other hand, we do not have to watch nervously the small GTIs in the mirror: yes, the 911 is now also breathtaking at low revs.
Above all, we can still continue to boost it - and how! The meter climbs up to 7500 rpm. His spontaneity and reactivity are almost a miracle at high speed. Hat! One can search in vain for a long time for a dead time in the response of the turbo and the acoustics develops with the rise in the towers. By activating the "S" or "S +" mode using the new rotary switch (now on the steering wheel, with a central button for 20 seconds at full speed), we can recognize the Porsche 911 Cars again perfectly: yes, here it is, the roaring and roaring sound of an engine that is not really domesticated. Yes, a little cleaner, but even closer to perfection.
The feeling remained the same. We can save the rear direction available as an option and recovery of the GT3: yes, of course, it is then even agiler; even during maneuvers. But even without it, the turbo swallows the track and allows to take the turns at an extreme pace while being able to remain comfortably under ten liters. On the other hand, prices starting at CHF 116 400 are not so convenient. That's too much for us, but at least we now know how to recognize the Carrera turbo of other drivers (internal 991 II): new skirts, side air intakes at the rear, brake lights and daytime running lights in four-point LED style and, finally, a modern infotainment system. Yes, we shed a tear of nostalgia for the old vacuum motor. But this Carrera turbo is really made to console us.
